I think some people misinterpreted my previous post. I'm not concerned about someone trying to kill/rob me, I am literally just incapable of social situations, and especially of negotiating. I simply cannot be assertive.
"There's a dent in that door panel; that's going to take about $10000 off the price."
"Yeah... you're right... I'm sorry."
I'm tempted to see if I can just sell it to a used car dealership or something. Will probably get screwed over anyway, but at least I'd /know/ that going in.

negotiate while naked, or something along those lines. it'll relax you enough to realize they're just monkeys like the rest of us.

Much like my girlfriend (who is the same way), it's time to just be assertive.
It's your old car, it's helped you out for a long way, and it's got a worth to it (even if most of that is intrinsic. Also, you're selling a "used" car, not a new one. The paint wont be perfect, and there may very well be a dent in the door. If the person doesn't like that, they should look at a "new" car, and then they can take it up with a dealer.
Or if you were close, I'd say let my girlfriend's mom sell it. She'll separate the scalpers from the buyers.

You need to man up, theres money involved here. Besides not every used car buyer is a tire kicker. I've had more than one person show up and pay the asking price with no negotiation.

Don't feel timid when you're selling. Remember that they're coming to you because they want your truck. Use that to your advantage. Try selling it for the price you want to sell it for by yourself, and if no one meets the price you want to sell it for, then take it to a dealership. If you take it to the dealership first thing, then there's (pretty much) absolutely no possibility of getting what you want for it. It might take a little more time to sell it by yourself, but if that means extra money in your pocket for your next car, it's all worth it.

Do you a friend of family member who can better handle these sorts of situations? I know I've been asked to handle things like this on more than one occasion, mainly because I'm pretty assertive (nearly a bully) when it comes to selling stuff.
Might be worth delegating it to someone else while you're standing by, if you're that concerned about it.

I've considered it, but I'm currently about 1,000 miles from anyone I know, so...

You built that for a specific purpose. It is a limited market for that. As you described previously, it has some dents and dings. It seems to have quality, useful, add-ons. Most buyers are looking for something to DD and this may not appeal to them. Have you advertised on the forums and other sites that cater to the type of folk you need to attract?
I know we spoke about this before. Check out the shops around town that cater to the folk you need to attract. They will often be able to point you in a direction.
Good Luck.

Yeah, I've mostly been advertising on off-road/Tacoma forums.

That's just the thing; It's hard to be determined to get as much of someone's money as you can when you fully understand that it's just as important to them as it is to you.

very true. i've taken hits on selling things, but i'm more likely to take a worse hit selling to a friend where i know the back story. but also, i'm not usually selling reliable transportation and if need be i'm not afraid to send them off to somewhere they could get something better for less. my nova's been for sale off/on. i list it at $5k, might take $3500 if i keep the engine. and my negotiating game is played between those.
i've got a different value system than most people. once traded a freshly rebuilt '91 toyota p/u for an engineless kawa quad & a kx400 2 stroke. and felt bad, because the gokart i built was way more fun than the truck. i'm not out to screw anyone over, but i won't let anyone screw me over.

Carmax is the easiest way to morph a car into cash. You won't get the most money, but think of it as the price you're paying to not have to spend tons of hours worrying about and selling it.
The next option would be to call local used lots and see if any sell on consignment.

I wouldn't do it. You get what, 70% of what you should.
But, it might be a good place to get an estimate for "lowest low-ball offer to consider accepting" + 5%.
If anyone walks up and goes below the Car Max offer, you walk away. If the person seems to be trying to strike a fair number, and meets you CarMax quote + 5% then call it good. And if no one buys it at your numbers, you have 30 days I think for CarMax's offer to stand, and you can go right back and sell it to them.

Do you know anyone that's familiar with vehicle values?
Get them to help or just go to KBB.com and input your information into their used vehicle value calculator.
From the looks of your truck...it's in "fair" condition. Find a price you think is fair and stick to it for a week or two before discounting it. Also, I'd only take cash...to easy to get screwed over with Paypal, checks, money orders, etc.
Can you put the hood back on and maybe clean the truck...that will help your value.

It's a modified vehicle. It's worth LESS than a stock one because nobody can be sure things were done right.
